Experience Mayhew, born in Chilmark, MA, January 27, 1673, (Also listed as February 5, 1673), and died November 21 (or 29), 1758, only sixteen at the death of his father, John, was the fourth generation to serve the isolated Indian missions of Martha's Vineyard. Experience's feminine name had been given to him by his grandmother, who had expected a girl and had died shortly before his birth revealed her mistake. He had grown up among the Indians and had learned their language as a second native tongue. Within five years following his father's death, he was preaching to the Indians. At the same time he was invited to become pastor of an English church on the island, but he chose the Indian mission, and there remained for sixty-five years. Without formal education and in an isolated field of labor, Experience must be ranked as one of the ablest men of his day. By 1698, Cotton Mather, well-known religious figure, was singing his praises. Another of Boston's ministerial greats, Charles Chauncey, later suggested that with an education Experience Mayhew would have found a place among the "first worthies of New England." Even without a university education, Experience was inclined toward scholarship. His first efforts along these lines were the production of Christian literature in the Indian language. He gradually became the acknowledged expert on New England Indian missions. He was the minister for the Society for Propogation of the Gospel in New England, 1694-1758. He translated Psalms into Indian dialects, 1709. His account of the Vineyard Indians, "Indian Converts," published in 1720 was a best seller of the day. In 1723 Harvard College bestowed its master of arts degree on him, a signal honor for a self-educated man. Reference: rootsweb.

English - They may have left then for Exeter, Devon, for Marian Merritt says William Phelps was from the county town of Exeter. When they sailed for American in 1630 they brought their six children. Mr. George E. Phelps lists these as born in Tewkesbury but McBride saw no baptismal records for them there. It is possible they were on some of the ruined sheets and certainly, if born at Exeter, must have been on their lost sheets.

NOTE: Later research, especially by Robert Charles Anderson, finds error with the above assertion that William was from Tewkesbury, but places him from Crewkerne. - Source : Holcombe Genealogy.
