Loudon Snowden Wainwright, a longtime columnist for Life magazine, a former assistant managing editor of Life and the author of ''The Great American Magazine,'' a history of Life, died of colon cancer yesterday at his home in Manhattan. He was 63 years old.Mr. Wainwright had been a reporter, correspondent, staff writer and bureau chief for Life and wrote its first personal column, ''The View from Here,'' since 1964.
A native of Manhattan, he was a graduate of St. Andrew's School in Middletown, Del., and of the University of North Carolina, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He also served in the Marine Corps.
At his bedside when he died was his longtime companion, Martha Fay, the mother of his daughter Anna[3].
Surviving are his wife, Martha, of Manhattan; two sons, the folk singer Loudon Wainwright 3d of Manhattan and Andrew, of Sebastopol, Calif.; three daughters, Martha, of Purdys, N.Y., Eleanor, of Katonah, N.Y., and Anna, of Manhattan, and six grandchildren[4].
